Pulborough is a large village in West Sussex, and it looks out over the River Arun across a large flood plain to the backdrop of the South Downs, very close to the South Downs National Park. Historically, it was the largest Roman settlement North of the South Downs, and was used as a fording place over the River Arun as it was on the Roman road from Chichester to London. Pulborough was noted in the Domesday Book, after the Norman Conquest.
The village has a number of listed buildings, which include beautiful thatched cottages, imposing stately homes and country barns. It retains some attractive old houses and character cottages, as well has having some new developments with a good mix of apartments and houses.
Pulborough has many shops, with some thriving local businesses, such as Nutbourne Vineyards. There are also good sized Sainsburys and Tesco stores locally. There are several pubs and restaurants serving a wide range of food from different continents. The village has a doctors surgery and dentist, and there are two schools teaching children up to the age of 11. Rydon Community College for older children is just a distance away near Storrington. There are a number of churches of various denominations close by, St. Mary's Church in the village dates from the 12th century, and is steeped in history.
The surrounding area has many attractions and places of interest – there are over thirty museums within a 20 minute drive of the village. There are also the RSPB Nature Reserve Pulborough Brooks, where a wide variety of birdlife can be viewed from a number of professionally constructed hides, with an informative Visitors Centre.
For those who like walking, there are numerous local walks through areas of outstanding natural beauty, and of course the beautiful South Downs. The village also has one of the fastest growing and most popular Angling Clubs in the South of England. Sports are well represented, and earliest records suggest cricket has been played in Pulborough since 1799, the Club boasts numerous Senior and Junior (Colts) teams. Other sports include golf at the famous West Sussex Club in Pulborough, polo at Cowdray Park and motor sports at the world famous Goodwood. There is a Leisure Centre, tennis and squash at Storrington, and sailing close by at Littlehampton and Chichester harbours.
Pulborough has very good road links, with the important north-south trunk road A29 and east-west A283 road routes. It is ideal for people needing fast access to London, with a railway station on the Arun Valley Line, taking approx. 75 minutes to reach London Victoria on the train.
