Horsham,West Sussex

The Horsham District is a large area that covers 205 square miles of varied countryside and attractive small towns and villages in the County of West Sussex. Horsham is the main town and administrative centre of the area, with over 40,000 people living in the town and its immediate area. There are 23 villages and more than 126,000 residents in the whole of the District.

The town received a Borough Charter in the 13th Century and grew into a thriving, bustling, medieval market town. This is still in evidence today with the narrow, paved twitterns (alleyways), pretty tree-lined streets and over fifty medieval buildings.

Its award-winning town centre with many Medieval and Tudor buildings provides a superb environment for shopping, strolling, browsing and relaxing. Walking through the mixture of intimate alleyways, wide streets, and landscaped piazzas, it is a delight to explore the specialist shops selling local produce, collectors' items and unusual gifts. Swan Walk is the town's modern and busy shopping mall with many well-known high street stores.

Much of the district is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with the chalk escarpments of the Sussex Downs in the South, and the gently rolling High Weald in the North. Woodlands are a particular landscape feature, with the extensive St. Leonard's Forest to the east of Horsham reputedly home to an ancient dragon!

The well known long distance route of the "South Downs Way" and the "Down's Link", a former railway route, give easy rights of way to the unspoiled countryside.
