Fittleworth, West Sussex
A picturesque little village situated between Pulborough and Petworth in West Sussex, Fittleworth has long been the haunt of artists and anglers. It is a quiet peaceful village in a wooded area close to the River Rother. The pleasant narrow lanes are interspersed with delightful stone cottages. Hidden away, deep in the woods to the north is a cottage named “Brinkwells�, said to have been the one time home of the great composer, Sir Edward Elgar. This is not surprising, the countryside here is so beautiful and Elgar would have drawn much inspiration as he trod the lonely woods.
Fittleworth is dominated by the church of St Mary, which stands proudly on top of a hill. The church was subject to extensive renovation work in the 19th century, fortunately though it’s two medieval bells have been retained, they date from the 14th and 15th centuries. Fittleworth Church of England First School moved into a fine new building in 1990, relocating from a Victorian building situated nearby. The children are aged between 4 and 10. The school fosters strong links with the community. The over 60’s club come into the school monthly to work with the children and are invited to their Harvest Festival service and tea with the children afterwards. The school also organises the summer and Christmas Fetes and the village firework show to which all villagers are invited. The Swan is a 14th century coaching inn and is steeped in history. The stables remain to show it once horsed stage coaches and post chaises. The larger town of Petworth is approximately two and half miles away and offers more comprehensive amenities and is an atmospheric place with a wealth of history. It is also home to Petworth House and Park, part of the National Trust.
