Slinfold, West Sussex
Slinfold is a very pretty village with some fine Georgian houses and stands near the River Arun approximately four miles west north west of Horsham. The Roman Stane Street goes right through the parish and main thoroughfare of the village is simply called “The Street�. Slinfold was an extremely industrious place and the remains of the iron industry is still in evidence in the locality of Roman Woods. There were other traditional industries such as basket-making, brickworks, a tanyard and a timber yard. One of Slindon’s most important local industries was the quarrying of Horsham Stone. The quarries are now exhausted but at one time enormous pieces of Horsham Stone were provided to build pavements all over Sussex and elsewhere, also for roofing.
Slinfold Park Golf & Country Club is set in Slinfold Park 165 acres of beautiful Sussex countryside and the couse has been thoughtfully and sympathetically sculptured . There are splendid views of the South Downs in the distance. In the village is a primary school and St. Peter’s church, which was built around 1861. The larger town of Horsham near-by offers an extensive range of shopping and other amenities including leisure/swimming complex and the Horsham Arts Centre. Horsham offers a main line station with services to Gatwick Airport, London Victoria, London Bridge and to the coast.
